San Juan County Fire Department provides all of the basic firefighter training for new recruits in partnership with San Juan College free of charge to the all new members. Along with no charge, college credits are gained through successful completion of the fire academy. The fire academy is offered every spring and fall semester at San Juan College.

Additional training is available to all members after completion of the fire academy. Examples of additional training include Emergency Medical Responder, EMT Basic, Swiftwater Technician, and Ropse Rescue Technician. Monthly CE classes are scheduled and hoseted across the county at different districts.

Other benefits include:

  • Payment to volunteers - $10 per call, meeting, or event. $10 per every 4 hour block of training to include the fire academy
  • Insurance coverage for on the job injuries
  • Free/anonymous counseing for members and immediate family through Choices Counseling Service
  • New members can join as to become fully certifed firefighters or support members.
    Firefighters can be either fully certified interior firefighters or due to certain limitations can complete the fire academy minus some labs and qualify as exterior firefighters.

    Support members fill different roles within each district. For example, a new member that already possesses a state medical license for EMR, EMTB, or above can become an EMS support member for a district. Support membership status is determined a the district level. Please review the Support Member Policy for more information.
